Internship

Interning and Vacationing

It’s not often you find people who want to further their education, while on vacation in Ethiopia. Meet Milkiyas Hailemariam, an undergraduate student of Psychology and Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, who interned at Tiku Anbesa Hospital during his summer break. With the help of Jegna, he embarked on an educational excursion to his hometown.

Task

He shadowed doctors and worked with medical students to acquire important skills.

  • The Work:

Worked with doctors and medical student

  • The result:

    "A rewarding and humbling experience

  • The perk:

Worked at a historic hospital in Addis Ababa

THE WORK

A true learning experience in the real world.

As a medical intern at Tikur Anbesa Hospital in Addis Ababa, Milkiyas worked with doctors and medical students in different areas of medicine. He rotated in various specialty areas, including neurology, cardiology, and rheumatology. He shadowed doctors during different procedures, while providing assistance with basic procedures and patient monitoring. In this six-week internship, he worked three-to-four hours per day, five days a week. Moreover, he formed new friendships with medical students at the hospital and had an authentic experience of the workplace for the first time.

THE RESULT

A “humbling experience” that puts things in perspective.

“The Tikur Anbessa internship helped me recognize that I like the social aspect of helping out your patients and getting the chance to really impact people's lives. Each patient has a unique case, and it’s a special bond between the doctor and patient. Overall, it was truly a rewarding and humbling experience. The medical system in Ethiopia has a lot of room for improvement. It made me grateful for the life I have. At the same, I became even more committed to do my part to improve the healthcare system there.”

— Milkiyas Hailemariam

THE PERK

This internship experience served him as a stepping stone in his academic career.

My next step in life is to complete my undergraduate program and go to grad school. I want to specialize in clinical psychology to be able to get my Ph.D. in Psychology. I want to either work in social, forensic, or sports psychology to help patients from different backgrounds. The Tikur Anbessa internship helped me figure out that I like the social aspect of helping out your patients and getting the chance to really impact people's lives. Each patient has a unique case, and it’s a special bond between the doctor and patient.
